Hi, I'm not a technical writer. Hereby the results of my first attempt to write a complete usage manual. This manual contains basic and detailed information on all features available in the VL-Wizard software, I hope you like what I have done...

Please use the POLL QUESTION so I can see if this is what you are looking for.

Your feedback is very welcome

Hi Rudy - the whole topic of breakpoints is still fuzzy for me. Some expansion of how the breakpoints (and mix / max settings) interact would be very helpful. For instance, here is a screen shot from the current voice I am playing around with. Some related questions:

- for any given note played, what is the damping decay actually applied? (example: Min is 92, max is 127 and the breakpoint curve value at E2 is, I think, 92+9=101. So which value actually applies?)

- what happens at the "ends" of the breakpoint curve? (example: D#1 is, I think, 92-33=59. Does D1 snap up to 92?)

- separately from the breakpoint question, how do the min/max values get applied to any given note?

I've looked through various manuals but didn't find this information.

Thanks!
Bob (saxninja)

The min/max of the KS/BP is not explained in the Yamaha VL manuals. So, this is my understanding.

- separately from the breakpoint question, how do the min/max values get applied to any given note?

The breakpoints on the MAXIMUM curve define the highest possible value (end position) for the parameter. You can compare this with the seiling in a room.
The breakpoints on the MINIMUM curve define the lowest value (start position). You can compare this with the floor of a room.
The parameter can only vary between its minimum and maximum. Compare this with a ball that can only bounce between the boundaries of the floor and seiling.

- for any given note played, what is the damping decay actually applied? (example: Min is 92, max is 127 and the breakpoint curve value at E2 is, I think, 92+9=101. So which value actually applies?)

Correct: In this case your minimum level of E2 is 101 and its maximum level is 127 (this is because the max of E2 is set 0).
If you would set the E2 max value to 63 then it's maximum level can go to up 127+63 = 200. With other words, you can push parameters above the 127 level (but the curve will not be displayed).
You can use the table with the three rows to change the breakpoint position, min and max levels. This is done by mouse click in a cell and drag up or down. Or click in a cell and use cursor up/down.
- what happens at the "ends" of the breakpoint curve? (example: D#1 is, I think, 92-33=59. Does D1 snap up to 92?)
Not correct, D1 will not snap to 92, it will behave the same way as the D#1 and snap to minimum 59 with a maximum of 127.
All notes played between C-2 and the first (left) breakpoint will follow the scale of that breakpoint. So, if the first breakpoint is set on key C1 with a scale value of 90 then all notes between C-2 up to C1 will follow the scale of 90.
All notes played between G8 and the last (right) breakpoint will follow the scale of that breakpoint. So, if the last breakpoint is set to key C6 with a scale value of 100 then all notes between C6 and G8 will follow the scale of 100.

One point of attention. A “bug” in the 5.0.4b version.
- the virtual keyboard of the keyscale editor does only show the correct incoming midi-note when the Element Note Shift is set to 0. When the Element Note Shift is set to -12 then you should also shift the entire KS/BP curve with one octave to the left. When the Element Note Shift is set to +12 then you should shift the entire KS/BP curve with one octave to the right. The upcoming version will show the incoming midi note keeping in mind the Element Note Shift value.

hope this clarifies.
Rudy

I made a start a couple of days ago, but haven't read it all yet - I was busy trying to figure out how to get the VL70m and software to do what I wanted instead :) I'll get back to it though.

It looks good so far. My main criticism, at this point, is that I didn't know there was a manual, until I started browsing the forum. I still can't see anything on the main site that refers to it.

I found the FAQ, but I don't relate well to the concept of someone else asking a question they think I might have wanted to ask, then answering it for me... I also started on the video tutorials, which are easy to find, but that's very time consuming, and I lack the attention span.

Manuals are good, and I'm glad that there is one. I think it might be time to point out that it exists, on the main site though - at least as prominently as the video tutorials.
